Advancing Health Education, Nutrition, and Screening through Community Partnerships

Dr. Flavia Andrade (Kinesiology and Community Health), Dr. Laura Edwards (Kinesiology and Community Health, College of Medicine), and Dr. Lindsey Burnett (College of Medicine) have partnered with the Common Ground Food Co-Operative, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, the Champaign County Christian Health Center, and the Champaign County School District to provide more comprehensive health education and health screening opportunities for individuals in the Champaign-Urbana community. Our grant, “Advancing Health Education, Nutrition, and Screening through Community Partnerships,” funded through the Office of Public Engagement, has identified four prominent health concerns facing local low income and uninsured community members. To address these concerns, we will be providing educational classes (including healthy cooking classes), health screening fairs, and access to follow-up medical care in the following four areas: (1) Diabetes, (2) Cardiovascular Disease, (3) Maternal Wellness, and (4) Child Wellness. It is our hope that these events will combine university and community resources to help address the current unmet need for health care in Champaign-Urbana.
